US Lawmaker Says Sick Infant, Family Deported by ICE in Texas
Castro confirmed that Juan Nicolás, his 16-month-old sister, and both parents were removed after weeks in detention in Texas, speaking with the family’s attorney to verify the situation.
"According to their attorney, ICE deported the family with only the money that they had in their commissary—a total of $190," Castro said. "To unnecessarily deport a sick baby and his entire family is heinous," adding that the family was left stranded across the border.
Juan Nicolás had spent three weeks in the Dilley detention center and was hospitalized on Monday night after developing bronchitis, yet was released around midnight despite his illness.
Castro emphasized the need for accountability, stating: "We are laser-focused on tracking them down, holding ICE accountable for this monstrous action, demanding specific details on their whereabouts and wellbeing, and ensuring their safety."
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE and US Customs and Border Protection following previous enforcement operations, including events in Minnesota in January where federal actions resulted in the deaths of US citizens, sparking public outrage and calls for investigation.
