Trump urges Democrats to cooperate following Minneapolis shooting
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump directed his message to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and all Democrats, urging them “to formally cooperate with the Trump Administration to enforce our Nation’s Laws, rather than resist and stoke the flames of Division, Chaos, and Violence.”
He specifically called on state and local authorities to hand over “all Criminal Illegal Aliens” held in prisons or jails to federal officials, along with individuals with active warrants or known criminal histories, for immediate deportation. “State and Local Law Enforcement must agree to turn over all Illegal Aliens arrested by Local Police. Local Police must assist Federal Law Enforcement in apprehending and detaining Illegal Aliens who are wanted for Crimes,” Trump emphasized.
Trump added that Democrats should “partner” with the federal government to ensure the protection of American citizens by facilitating the swift removal of criminal illegal immigrants. He also urged Congress to pass legislation to “END Sanctuary Cities,” describing them as the root cause of the problem and asserting that American cities should only be safe for law-abiding citizens, not for illegal immigrants who have broken federal laws.
The remarks came after a 37-year-old man, Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, was shot and killed on Saturday—the second fatal shooting by federal agents in the city this month. Pretti’s death followed the January 7 killing of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, by an ICE officer.
The administration claimed Good was “very disorderly,” “stalking and impeding” agents’ work, and “viciously ran over” an officer, describing her actions as “domestic terrorism,” although bystander videos showed her vehicle turning away as the officer fired. The incident intensified tensions and sparked clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
