Obama denounces killing of Minneapolis nurse

(MENAFN) Former U.S. President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama issued a joint statement on Sunday denouncing the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who was fatally shot the day before by a federal Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis.

In their statement, they described the death as both devastating and deeply alarming for the country as a whole, saying: "The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It

should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many
of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault."

Pretti’s death intensified an already volatile situation, leading to confrontations in the streets between demonstrators and law enforcement authorities.

The shooting occurred in the broader context of another fatal incident earlier in the month, when Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, was killed on Jan. 7 by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Federal officials claimed Good had behaved aggressively, describing her as “very disorderly,” accusing her of “stalking and impeding” agents throughout the day, and alleging that she “viciously ran over” an officer with her vehicle, labeling her actions as “domestic terrorism.” However, widely shared videos recorded by bystanders appeared to show her vehicle moving away from the agent at the moment he opened fire.

The Obamas acknowledged that federal immigration and law enforcement officers face demanding and complex responsibilities. At the same time, they emphasized that the public expects those responsibilities to be carried out within the bounds of the law, with accountability, and in coordination with state and local authorities.

They argued that such standards were not being met in Minnesota, stating: "That’s not what we’re seeing in Minnesota."

They further criticized recent enforcement practices, saying that people nationwide have grown increasingly alarmed by the presence of masked federal agents operating in ways that appear unchecked and deliberately intimidating. According to their statement, these actions seem intended to harass, provoke, and endanger residents of a major U.S. city rather than protect them.

The Obamas concluded by noting that these methods have now culminated in the deaths of two American citizens, both killed in Minneapolis, underscoring the seriousness of the moment and the need for urgent reflection and change.
